slidestandard1The Computer Society of Kenya has awarded the Standard Group for having the best media website at an awards ceremony dubbed a ‘Night with the stars’, held in Nairobi.

The awards dinner held on Thursday was aimed at recognising individuals and companies which have made outstanding contributions in the information and communication industry. The event was the 17th edition of the annual fete.

Speaking at the ceremony, Information and Communications minister Samuel Poghisho lauded ICT industry in Kenya for their innovation adding that this has given Kenya international recognition.

“You have put Kenya on the map as a place to innovate, grow technology and solve problems,” said Poghisho. The minister, who was the guest of honour at the event, promised that the Government would continue to support the ICT development, including expanding the reach of fibre optic cables.

“Five years ago, there were no undersea cables in Kenya. Since then we have four and we are planning grow the network to over 20,000 km all over the country,” said Pohgisho.

 ICT innovation

On receiving the award, Online Editor David Ohito credited Standard Digital’s audience for the award. “This is the result of our continued interaction with our audience on the multimedia platform. They engage us and we engage them as we strive to provide crisp content. For us, this is the beginning of a long journey to avail information and entertainment in the easiest and fastest way possible,” said Ohito.

Mr Ohito also thanked Standard Group Managing Editors and the Director Value and Innovation, Francis Munywoki, stating that their guidance and support has enabled the online team to reach great heights. The Standard Group’s website, Standard Digital (www.standardmedia.co.ke), brings together content from the The Standard Newspaper, KTN and Radio Maisha as well as corporate news.

Also at the event, Kaspersky Lab was recognised as the Best IT Security Company with the Best IT Security Solution for 2012.

Mavoko Municipal Council was awarded for the best use of ICT in local authorities while Laptrust for best use of ICT innovation in retirement benefit financial services industry.

The Higher Education Loans Board was awarded for outstanding ICT support financial in advanced learning higher education, Kainet for best network in use of agriculture and IQ Plus for outstanding accounting solutions 2012.  Kemu University received the best use of ICT in higher education.

Family Bank landed best use of ICT in Banking Mobile Banking Pesa Pap, Unaitas Sacco Ltd for best use of ICT solutions in Saccos and CIC Insurance for outstanding innovation Insurance. Access Kenya was feted the unified communications solutions partner.

The award recognised the firm’s efforts in delivering collaboration solutions namely immersive telepresence, video conferencing and IP telephony solutions the firm has been deploying over the past 12 months.
