Google boss sees Nairobi as Africa's ICT leader

Google's executive chairman is touting Nairobi as the potential leader of Africa's information technology revolution.

In a blog posting about his recent visit to five black African countries, Google chief Eric Schmidt wrote on Tuesday that "Nairobi has emerged as a serious tech hub and may become Africa's leader".

Mr Schmidt cited "a combination of relatively stable politics, the British legal system, and a benign climate" as factors that attract "a significant share of foreign investment."

Kenya offers Sh140m support for ICT start-ups

Kenya has launched the first government supported ICT-based incubation programme worth $1.6 million (Sh140 million), with funding from the International Development Association (IDA).

The incubation programme is expected to address many of the gaps that have been identified as responsible for the high failure rate among small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

140 ICT Technicians needed to speed up the wheel of justice

The judiciary is recruiting some 147 information and communication technology officers to entrench the use of information communication technology (ICT) in the courts’ systems.

Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in an ICT field- computer science, electronic engineering or other related areas.

Top companies line up for piece of Konza

The Konza Technopolis has attracted major local service industry players, boosting its chances of success as foreign firms also line up for space in the project dubbed “the African Silicon Savannah”.

Fourteen large firms have expressed interest in the first stage of the Konza Technology City project set to be carried out in four phases of five years each.

The local firms setting up at the Sh26 billion project include Safaricom, Wananchi Online, Kemri, Kari, the University of Nairobi, the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and the Nairobi Hospital.

President Kibaki is expected to officially launch the development of Konza Technology City setting the stage for construction work to begin.

At the event, the President will parade a group of foreign and local investors who will be involved in the first phase of the city to be set up over the next five years.

“We are excited to finally launch this development, though it has come later than we initially expected. This will remove doubts among sceptics who thought Konza was a white elephant. Watch this space in the next five years,” Information and Communications permanent secretary Bitange Ndemo said in an interview last week.
