Kenya hosts ICT governance forum

More than 100 delegates from across Africa are meeting in Mombasa to discuss developments in the open governance initiative that aims to open up information to the members of the public.
The two-day forum, organised by the Ministry of Information and Communication and the Kenya ICT Board, draws participation from over 16 countries with representatives from government, the civil society and non-governmental organisations.

Automation of records at KNH stalls due to lack of funds

The automation of patients’ records meant to ease service delivery at the Kenyatta National Hospital has stalled with only 10 per cent of the work done.
Hospital chief executive Richard Lesiyampe says only four million records out of the 40 million target have been automated.
The hospital has, however, started ensuring that entry of new records is done electronically to avoid increasing the workload. The remaining records will be automated once the hospital gets enough funds to complete the exercise, he said.

There is no doubting the power of information technology (IT) in accelerating learning. If well managed, IT can be a great equalizer; because a child in Turkana would have access to the same information as another in New York. IT also enables learning of all branches of knowledge. For primary and secondary school children, IT provides an important foundation, is motivating the job of the teacher much easier as pupils have the possibility of learning on their own. For the young, it is so addictive that it can keep many out of trouble.
CCK now rules out third digital signal distributor

The communications regulator has broken a promise to award a third digital signal distribution licence to local broadcasters.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) director general Francis Wangusi said it is currently “not tenable” for the government to issue a third digital signal distribution licence.
