Visa, Equity launch global mobile cash transfer service

Visa has partnered with Equity Bank to launch a mobile money transfer service dubbed Visa Personal Payments (VPP), which allows users to send money directly from one mobile phone to another.

The California-based payments technology firm becomes the latest entrant to Kenya’s vibrant mobile money industry; currently dominated by Safaricom’s M-Pesa.

After completing his degree in information technology at the University of Wisconsin, US, David Mugo began toying with the idea of starting an IT firm.

“I have always wanted to be an independent entrepreneur and operate as my own boss. With my qualifications in IT, I felt that I could take the risk,” he says.

However, he did not have the requisite capital. “The market was not yet ripe for the kind of online business I wanted to do — blogging and digital marketing.”

GROWING Investor confidence as a result of the impressive Q1 results, especially from the banking sector, fuelled the 1.84 per cent rise in equity prices last week to close at 4,978.79 points. Telecommunication and technology sector easily led by trading 90 million shares, accounting for 47.41 per cent of the weekly turnover declined to sh3.82 billion from sh5 billion posted the previous week. The bond market traded sh16 billion worth of bonds compared to sh11.8 billion posted the previous week.

Is the Internet too expensive in Kenya?

The ICT industry regulator the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) publishes its report on the state of the Telecommunication industry in Kenya quarterly.

In its recent report, the CCK has some impressive figures that shows a vibrant sector that continues to grow. 

With annual investments of Shs29 billion registered in the industry, 30 million or 78% of Kenyans using mobile phones and 16 million or 41% of Kenyans accessing the Internet amongst other statistics does paint a rosy picture for the Kenyan Telecommunication Sector.

ICT PLAYERS TO HOLD KEY MEETING IN NAIROBI
