witsa-news lnd thumbI am excited to let you know that WITSA has signed an important Memorandum of Understanding with Dr Mukhisa Kituyi, Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The objective of this MoU is to explore, develop and collaborate on potential activities between UNCTAD and WITSA that mutually advance the missions of both organizations.

This milestone agreement is the culmination of extensive discussions between WITSA, Dr. Kituyi and Mr Torbjörn Fredriksson of UNCTAD’s Division on Technology and Logistics, dating back to WITSA’s World Congress on Information Technology held in Guadalajara, Mexico on September 29 to October 1 last year.

The MoU outlines three key areas of cooperation:

·         Knowledge building: collaboration in the area of ICT data collection and dissemination; joint research activities in order to identify policy recommendations that enable optimal leveraging of the capabilities of the global ICT industry in promoting sustainable development by generation of business opportunity and creation of jobs; and sharing of case studies on relevant topics for consideration in UNCTAD’s Information Economy Report.

·         Capacity building: Undertaking joint activities to build the capacity of national IT and software associations, especially in developing countries; organizing joint regional meetings aimed at bringing senior government representatives and senior IT sector representatives together to enhance public-private dialogue related to ICT sector development in developing countries; and raising grants to support joint activities.

·         Conferences and events: Sharing information regarding upcoming activities; jointly participating in and speaking at WITSA and UNCTAD conferences, expert meetings and other events related to ICT for development; partnering in the organizing of events concerning areas of mutual interest; and identifying potential speakers for their respective conferences and events.
